Breaking a Guinness World Record

This past Friday, my 15-year-old niece and I attended the National Flute Association’s (NFA) annual convention at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. It was such a joy to bring my niece to the lobby concerts and to have her experience the exhibits and audition numerous flutes. Our fondest memory was playing in the largest flute ensemble. James Galway (along with NFA and approximately 2000 flutes) set out to break the current Guinness World Record of 1,975 flutists in one ensemble set on July 14, 2009 in China. We found out today that there were 1,989 flutes recorded at the event, so we did actually break the world record. There were probably more than this amount in the room, but there was some misunderstanding about how to register for the event. The picture shows about 60% of the people in attendance. My niece and I are where the blue arrow is pointing.

It was a great experience to be rehearsed and to play under the leadership of James Galway. In addition, it was wonderful to attend it with my niece, who wants to major in music education and become a band director.
